Job Overview

  • Relay is seeking a Software Engineer II to join its engineering organization in Toronto, Ontario. As part of a mission to modernize financial tools for small business owners, this role focuses on establishing technical direction, architecting scalable banking systems, and resolving complex technical challenges across interconnected engineering platforms. The position involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to translate ambiguous problems into concrete, high-impact outcomes while elevating quality, security, and operational performance.
  • Working within a modern tech stack centered on TypeScript, Node.js, React, and Amazon Web Services, the engineer will own major initiatives, establish engineering guardrails, and mentor team members to foster technical leadership. Designed for experienced software professionals who combine strong product judgment with system design expertise, this hybrid position offers an opportunity to shape fintech architecture and scale digital banking services across North America.

Key Responsibilities

  • ★ Architect, design, and guide high-risk technical infrastructure across interconnected banking platforms while maintaining standards for reliability, security, and performance.
  • ★ Lead complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives from early problem identification through deployment and outcome measurement.
  • ★ Evaluate technical trade-offs by balancing customer experience, commercial priorities, infrastructure expenses, and security risks.
  • ★ Build technical consensus and align teams across varying departmental priorities using evidence, context, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • ★ Identify architectural bottlenecks and systemic issues proactively prior to formal project assignment.
  • ★ Implement engineering frameworks, developer tooling, documentation, and operational guardrails to improve productivity across teams.
  • ★ Mentor and coach fellow software engineers while delegating technical responsibility to cultivate future leadership within the department.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • ★ Proven background in guiding system architecture and managing high-stakes technical decisions for complex, interconnected platforms.
  • ★ Demonstrated experience leading ambiguous, cross-team engineering projects to successful, measurable conclusions.
  • ★ Strong technical judgment capable of evaluating architectural decisions against business objectives, financial costs, and risk factors.
  • ★ Demonstrated ability to influence, collaborate, and build alignment with engineering stakeholders without relying on formal authority.
  • ★ Experience establishing engineering standards, developer utilities, or operational workflows that enhance team delivery.
  • ★ Strong dedication to developing engineering talent through structured coaching, feedback, and delegating ownership.
  • ★ Ability to thrive within dynamic, fast-paced work environments while navigating technical ambiguity and evolving priorities.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • ★ Professional background working in high-growth technology companies or early-stage startup environments.
  • ★ Technical experience with JavaScript environments, particularly TypeScript, React, and Node.js.
  • ★ Practical familiarity with Amazon Web Services (including ECS, S3, RDS, DynamoDB, and Lambda) alongside automated deployment pipelines.
  • ★ Prior engineering experience within digital banking, fintech platforms, or regulated financial environments.

Our Tech Stack

  • ★ Front-End Technologies: React, TypeScript, React Native
  • ★ Back-End Infrastructure: Node.js, TypeScript, Terraform, AWS (DynamoDB, RDS Postgres, Lambda, S3, SQS, SNS, SES, ElasticSearch, ECS)
  • ★ Engineering Tools: Cursor, Claude, GitHub, GitHub Actions, Datadog, Jira, Metabase

Who May Be a Good Fit for This Role?

  • This role may be suitable for candidates who are experienced software engineers looking to shape technical architecture across interconnected digital banking platforms. It aligns well with developers who excel at solving ambiguous technical challenges, evaluating engineering trade-offs against business goals, and influencing teams without formal authority. Candidates who value mentoring peers, embedding AI utilities into their engineering workflows, and building impactful financial tools for small business owners will find this hybrid position in Toronto rewarding.

What the Company Offers

  • ★ Annual base salary ranging between $175,500 CAD and $214,500 CAD, with a standard starting salary of $195,000 CAD for full scope readiness.
  • ★ Flexible, impact-based compensation model with evaluations conducted beyond fixed annual review cycles.
  • ★ Hybrid work arrangement based out of Toronto, Ontario.

Recruitment and Selection Process

  • ★ Stage 1: Introductory 45-minute video call via Google Meet with a member of the Talent Acquisition team.
  • ★ Stage 2: Technical 60-minute live pair-coding assessment with two Software Engineers.
  • ★ Stage 3: Strategic 60-minute video discussion via Google Meet with two Engineering Leaders.
  • ★ Stage 4: Take-home system design exercise, followed by a 60-minute video architecture review with two Engineering team members.
  • ★ Stage 5: Final 45-minute in-person interview session with a member of the Executive Leadership team.

Application Tips

  • Applicants may want to highlight their experience architecting distributed backend services or modern frontend applications using TypeScript, Node.js, React, and AWS. In your CV or portfolio, emphasize key projects where you managed complex system trade-offs, led cross-team technical initiatives from ambiguity to delivery, and mentored junior team members. Demonstrating prior exposure to financial technology platforms, regulated data environments, or automated deployment pipelines can also showcase technical alignment with Relay's engineering ecosystem.
