Job Overview
- L3Harris is seeking a Software Engineering Intern to join its technology development team in Carlsbad, California. This internship program offers hands-on industry experience for university students actively pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or related technical disciplines. Working under a flexible 9/80 work schedule—which provides every other Friday off—interns collaborate directly with cross-functional engineering teams across all phases of the software development life cycle.
- In this position, interns apply computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis concepts to design, build, and evaluate embedded software for real-time tactical radio equipment and advanced control systems.
Key Responsibilities
- ★ Apply mathematical analysis, computer science principles, and software engineering concepts to develop target application software.
- ★ Collaborate with cross-functional engineering team members to evaluate hardware-software interfaces, operational performance requirements, and overall system design.
- ★ Support and participate in all stages of the software development life cycle, including requirements analysis, design, coding, integration, and testing of real-time embedded software for advanced tactical radio equipment.
- ★ Develop software programs, test procedures, and associated technical documentation.
- ★ Utilize modeling tools and lab equipment to establish operating data, execute experimental tests, and analyze performance results.
- ★ Participate in formal peer reviews to identify, track, and repair software defects.
- ★ Work with diverse programming languages and development environments—such as C++, C#, C, Java, Python, and RTOS—across Windows, Linux, mobile platforms, and custom processor architectures.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ★ Active enrollment in an accredited university Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Wireless Engineering, Information Security, Mathematics, Digital Arts & Sciences, or a closely related field.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- ★ Coursework or practical experience in programming languages and tools such as C++, C#, C, Java, Ruby, JEE, HTML5, XML, SQL, or Qt.
- ★ Familiarity with operating systems and frameworks including Windows, .NET, Unix, Linux, Android, or Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
- ★ Knowledge of concepts such as Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Real-Time Controls, Wireless Communications, Software Security, or Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOA/OOD).
- ★ Exposure to specialized technical areas such as Robotics, Embedded Systems, or Hadoop.
What the Company Offers
- ★ Base compensation range of $29.00 to $35.00 per hour (California pay transparency range based on qualifications, experience, and location).
- ★ Comprehensive health and disability insurance options.
- ★ 401(k) retirement savings plan with company matching contributions.
- ★ Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
- ★ Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
- ★ Educational assistance opportunities.
- ★ Paid parental leave benefits.
- ★ Paid time off (PTO) and company-paid holidays.
Who May Be a Good Fit for This Role?
- This role may be suitable for computer science, software engineering, and electrical engineering students who want to gain practical experience building real-time embedded software for advanced communication platforms. Candidates who enjoy low-level programming in languages like C++, C, or Java, working with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), and resolving hardware-software interface challenges will find this internship engaging. It is particularly well suited for students seeking structured engineering mentorship, peer code reviews, and a 9/80 work schedule with alternate Fridays off while completing their university studies in California.
Application Tips
- Applicants may want to highlight specific academic projects, lab coursework, or personal software builds that involve C++, C#, Java, Python, or embedded systems development. Emphasizing experience with operating systems like Linux, Unix, or RTOS environments can showcase technical readiness for tactical radio software projects. Including details about object-oriented design (OOA/OOD), database management (SQL), or software testing procedures on your resume will help demonstrate practical engineering capabilities. If you have completed coursework in hardware-software interface design, robotics, or wireless communication, detailing these achievements can strengthen your overall application.
