Job Overview

  • Bascom Hunter is seeking an Embedded Software Engineering Intern to assist with the creation, integration, and evaluation of low-level software systems designed for aerospace and defense technology. Operating within cross-functional engineering teams, the intern will contribute to software solutions that communicate with electronic hardware to control and monitor mission-critical equipment.
  • Throughout the placement, the intern will gain practical exposure across all stages of embedded software engineering, including requirements analysis, code execution, hardware-software integration, system testing, and technical documentation. The position involves working on real-world defense and aerospace programs, offering valuable industry experience that may serve as a foundation for long-term career growth within the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • ★ Assist in designing, constructing, integrating, and validating embedded software and firmware for aerospace and defense hardware.
  • ★ Write, refine, test, and enhance low-level software applications using C and C++ programming languages.
  • ★ Build software targeted for microcontrollers, microprocessors, and specialized embedded hardware units.
  • ★ Conduct hardware and software integration while diagnosing technical issues across component, subsystem, and system stages.
  • ★ Help develop device drivers, control architecture, communication channels, and low-level system software.
  • ★ Connect embedded software with physical hardware elements, including sensors, actuators, and electronic circuitry.
  • ★ Execute implementation and validation procedures for various hardware communication protocols and interfaces.
  • ★ Build custom test scripts, utilities, and software tools to perform system-level verification and debugging.
  • ★ Participate in multidisciplinary technical meetings, software architecture reviews, and peer code reviews.
  • ★ Partner with electrical, mechanical, systems, and software engineering disciplines to produce cohesive technical solutions.
  • ★ Perform hands-on bench testing, data logging, root-cause troubleshooting, and performance evaluations in a lab setting.
  • ★ Author and update engineering documents, such as software requirements, design specifications, test plans, and evaluation reports.
  • ★ Adopt standard industry methodologies for embedded software design, version control, and quality verification.
  • ★ Contribute to software initiatives designed to comply with customer specifications and defense industry standards.
  • ★ Apply analytical data and empirical evidence to guide technical decisions in alignment with project milestones.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • ★ Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • ★ Practical programming competence using C or C++ languages.
  • ★ Core comprehension of embedded systems design principles and low-level software engineering concepts.
  • ★ Foundational knowledge of computer hardware architecture, digital electronics, and hardware-software interaction.
  • ★ Solid analytical capabilities with strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • ★ Self-directed work ethic with the capability to collaborate productively within cross-functional engineering teams.
  • ★ High level of organization and strong attention to detail.
  • ★ Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • ★ Familiarity with software or firmware programming for microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs, or embedded platforms is advantageous.
  • ★ Exposure to real-time operating systems (RTOS) or bare-metal development environments is preferred.
  • ★ Knowledge of embedded communication buses and protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, or Ethernet is beneficial.
  • ★ Familiarity with board support packages, bootloaders, or low-level device driver creation is helpful.
  • ★ Hands-on experience using lab diagnostic gear, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or JTAG debuggers, is desirable.
  • ★ Understanding of Git or equivalent source code version control tools is preferred.
  • ★ Exposure to Linux operating systems or embedded Linux platforms is advantageous.
  • ★ Ability to write test automation scripts using Python or other scripting tools is beneficial.
  • ★ Understanding of C/C++ memory allocation, compilers, and storage class specifiers is preferred.
  • ★ Background in software verification techniques, test procedures, or defense and aerospace software standards is helpful.
  • ★ Prior hands-on engineering involvement through personal projects, student design teams, academic research, or previous internships is valued.
Who May Be a Good Fit for This Role? This role may be suitable for computer engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science students seeking practical experience in low-level software development for defense and aerospace technology. Candidates who enjoy working directly with electronic hardware, writing C or C++ code, and analyzing system behavior in a laboratory setting will find this placement engaging. It is an ideal opportunity for proactive individuals who possess solid problem-solving abilities, communicate well across technical disciplines, and aspire to build a career in embedded systems, robotics, or mission-critical software engineering.

What the Company Offers

  • ★ Paid internship structure.
