Job Overview
- MetaMask is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical architecture and strategic roadmap for its Perpetuals trading experience across Extension and Mobile applications. As a core technical leader within a remote-first, global engineering organization, the successful candidate will oversee end-to-end trading features, spanning real-time market data flows, position management, order execution, and margin or liquidation user interfaces.
- This role focuses on solving high-complexity engineering challenges inherent to decentralized financial platforms, including precision decimal calculations, state consistency during high-frequency price updates, and system resilience against market feed or network connection failures. Working across multi-functional domain teams, the Staff Engineer will make critical architectural decisions, evaluate build-versus-buy trade-offs, and establish engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
- ▪ Design and own the technical architecture and product roadmap for the Perpetuals experience across mobile and browser extension platforms.
- ▪ Define technical standards and architecture for high-stakes trading functionality, including precision arithmetic, decimal handling, and real-time state synchronization.
- ▪ Ensure high system resilience and fault tolerance during network connectivity drops or market feed interruptions.
- ▪ Drive alignment and technical coordination across cross-functional product, experience, and protocol integration teams.
- ▪ Evaluate domain trade-offs, execute build-versus-buy analyses, and resolve complex technical bottlenecks before production rollout.
- ▪ Collaborate with engineering leadership on feature prioritization and technical roadmapping.
- ▪ Conduct comprehensive architecture and design reviews while mentoring mid-level and senior software engineers.
- ▪ Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering teams during strategic planning cycles to represent the Perpetuals domain.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ▪ Demonstrated expertise in leading technical architecture for complex software domains across mobile or web environments.
- ▪ Background in building high-frequency or real-time data flow systems with strict state consistency requirements.
- ▪ Deep technical knowledge of numerical precision, decimal handling, and financial or trading-critical calculations.
- ▪ Experience designing systems resilient to feed failures, network latency, and connectivity disruptions.
- ▪ Proven experience evaluating architectural trade-offs, system dependencies, and build-versus-buy scenarios.
- ▪ Track record of mentoring engineering colleagues, guiding code reviews, and maintaining technical documentation.
- ▪ Ability to lead technical alignment across distributed, cross-functional engineering teams.
Recruitment Process and Background Verification
- ▪ Initial candidate screening or resume evaluation may utilize automated processing tools to assist recruiting teams, with human recruiters reviewing all candidates and making all final hiring decisions.
- ▪ Candidates selected for employment will be required to undergo identity and background verification checks, which may include employment history, educational credentials, and criminal record verifications.
What the Company Offers
- ▪ Fully remote working setup within supported EMEA locations.
- ▪ Opportunity to work on a large-scale self-custodial financial platform serving millions of users globally.
- ▪ Dynamic, inclusive, and startup-oriented team culture.
Application Tips
- Applicants may want to highlight their experience designing systems that handle real-time data feeds, high-frequency updates, and strict state consistency. When preparing your application, emphasize past achievements in architectural decision-making, such as build-versus-buy trade-offs, precision handling in financial applications, and system recovery strategies for network failures. Demonstrating technical leadership, such as conducting design reviews, authoring system documentation, and mentoring senior or mid-level engineers across distributed teams, will further align your application with staff-level expectations.
Prepare for Your Interview
- These suggested questions can help you prepare for an interview by focusing on the skills, responsibilities, and technical areas relevant to this role.
Suggested Interview Questions
- Q: How do you design client-side architecture to handle high-frequency, real-time price and position updates without compromising state consistency?
- Q: What strategies do you employ for handling fixed-point arithmetic, precision, and floating-point decimal rounding in financial trading interfaces?
- Q: How do you ensure user interface resilience and state recovery when data feeds or network connections fail during active trading sessions?
- Q: Can you describe a framework you use when making build-versus-buy decisions for critical domain infrastructure?
- Q: How do you approach designing liquidation and margin management workflows to ensure clarity and accuracy for users?
- Q: How do you drive technical alignment across separate product, mobile, extension, and protocol teams when building interdependent features?
- Q: How do you conduct architectural design reviews and mentor senior engineers to maintain high code quality across distributed teams?
- Q: What technical considerations do you prioritize when building real-time trading interfaces for both mobile and browser extension platforms?
