Job Overview
- LiveKit is seeking a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Distributed Systems to join its globally distributed engineering team. LiveKit develops the real-time network infrastructure behind multimodal AI interfaces and interactive voice and video applications, supporting billions of calls annually for major enterprise platforms. In this role, engineers work directly on the core foundation—building, scaling, and optimizing control planes, data pathways, and observability systems that power the platform.
- The work involves engineering high-concurrency, low-latency architectures that remain resilient across regional failures. Utilizing technologies such as Go, gRPC, Raft, NATS, Kubernetes, and ClickHouse, the engineer will own system components end-to-end. This position is ideally suited for senior software developers with proven expertise in production distributed systems, consensus protocols, and real-time network performance who thrive in small, fast-moving engineering environments.
Key Responsibilities
- ★ Architect, scale, and refine the core control, data delivery, and observability infrastructure driving LiveKit Cloud.
- ★ Construct resilient, multi-region distributed architectures capable of graceful degradation during network partitions or component failures.
- ★ Develop internal libraries, communication protocols, and developer tools to improve platform reliability and engineering delivery velocity.
- ★ Analyze, diagnose, and harden critical system execution paths using real-world traffic data, distributed tracing, metrics, and automated stress tests.
- ★ Drive architectural capabilities covering distributed state management, resource scheduling, identity systems, and telemetry.
- ★ Take full end-to-end engineering ownership of software features, from initial prototyping through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing iteration.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ★ Proven track record of designing, deploying, and maintaining distributed systems in high-scale production environments.
- ★ Strong understanding of distributed state management, consensus protocols, coordination models, and fault-tolerance mechanisms.
- ★ Demonstrated ability to manage full product lifecycles, taking complete ownership from initial design to live production monitoring.
- ★ Deep technical comprehension of data flow dynamics, state transitions, high-throughput performance tuning, and system correctness.
- ★ Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex architectural concepts clearly to cross-functional peers.
- ★ Proficiency in core computer science principles and a systematic approach to breaking down intricate systems into modular components.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- ★ Strong fluency in the Go programming language or a strong desire to master Go rapidly.
- ★ Practical experience with messaging systems, RPC frameworks, or consensus protocols such as NATS, gRPC, Raft, Paxos, or etcd.
- ★ Background in real-time, ultra-low-latency infrastructure or real-time audio/video streaming protocols.
- ★ Hands-on experience developing or scaling observability platforms, including distributed tracing, metric pipelines, and large-scale logging using tools like ClickHouse, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry.
What the Company Offers
- ★ Annual base salary compensation ranging from $135,000 to $300,000, tailored to geographic location, seniority, and technical expertise.
- ★ Equity ownership component included in the compensation package.
- ★ Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision health insurance benefits.
- ★ Flexible vacation and time-off policy.
- ★ Direct impact and collaboration within a small, senior engineering team focused on high-craft developer infrastructure.
Application Tips
- Applicants may want to highlight their hands-on experience building, scaling, and troubleshooting production distributed systems on their resume or CV. Detailing specific technical contributions to consensus systems, RPC frameworks, pub/sub messaging architectures, or low-latency network protocols can effectively showcase relevant expertise. Candidates are also encouraged to emphasize experience with Go, Kubernetes, Raft, or observability tooling like OpenTelemetry and ClickHouse. If you have contributed to open-source infrastructure projects or submitted pull requests to developer platforms, highlighting these contributions or linking your GitHub profile can serve as strong evidence of technical depth and engineering craft.
