Job Overview
- Keysight Technologies is inviting applications for a Software Development Intern to join its engineering team in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Positioned at the intersection of embedded software creation and physical hardware evaluation, this internship provides hands-on exposure to building functional prototypes, desktop graphical user interfaces (GUIs), and automated test suites.
- The intern will actively participate in standard Agile and DevOps cycles across both Windows and Linux operating systems, debugging low-level communications and converting manual hardware testing workflows into automated execution scripts. Additionally, the intern will drive a dedicated capstone project from initial concept through design, implementation, and final presentation.
Key Responsibilities
- ▪ Construct graphical user interfaces and functional software prototypes to interact with and control underlying electronic hardware systems.
- ▪ Conduct direct software and hardware integration testing to identify technical glitches, system defects, and execution bugs.
- ▪ Convert manual hardware evaluation workflows into structured, repeatable automated test scripts.
- ▪ Support broader engineering team initiatives across active software development pipelines.
- ▪ Participate in Agile ceremonies, continuous integration processes, code reviews, and DevOps workflows on Windows and Linux platforms.
- ▪ Manage a dedicated capstone intern project from preliminary architectural design through final solution presentation.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ▪ Active enrollment in an academic degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- ▪ Demonstrated programming capabilities in at least one language: Python, C/C++, or C#.
- ▪ Practical exposure to hardware driver interactions and low-level communication interfaces such as bus structures or serial protocols.
- ▪ Familiarity with desktop GUI development frameworks, including PyQt6, Qt, or WPF/.NET.
- ▪ Basic understanding of cryptography concepts, data protection principles, and security fundamentals.
- ▪ Eagerness and curiosity to master positioning data systems and GPS/GNSS operational mechanics.
- ▪ Foundational knowledge of Agile software development practices and core DevOps methodologies.
- ▪ Functional proficiency operating within both Windows and Linux operating systems.
- ▪ Capability to perform hands-on physical hardware testing to inform automated script development.
- ▪ Effective oral and written communication skills with a collaborative mindset for sharing technical ideas.
What the Company Offers
- ▪ Relocation assistance options available for qualifying candidates.
Application Tips
- Applicants may want to highlight hands-on academic or personal projects that showcase C++, C#, or Python programming on their resume. Highlighting experience with graphical interface frameworks like PyQt or WPF, or low-level communication protocols such as serial or bus interfaces, can effectively illustrate technical readiness. Candidates should also emphasize any prior experience using Linux environments, Git version control, or automated testing scripts. Additionally, detailing coursework or self-driven exploration in cryptography, GNSS systems, or embedded software development will help demonstrate alignment with the core focus areas of this engineering team.
Prepare for Your Interview
- These suggested questions can help you prepare for an interview by focusing on the skills, responsibilities, and technical areas relevant to this role.
Suggested Interview Questions
- Q: How do you handle low-level communication protocols when connecting software applications to physical hardware devices?
- Q: What framework do you prefer for building desktop GUIs, and how do you structure the user interface architecture?
- Q: Can you describe a project where you translated manual testing procedures into automated scripts using Python, C++, or C#?
- Q: How do you approach debugging integration issues that occur between a software application and hardware components?
- Q: What is your familiarity with operating system differences between Windows and Linux when developing and testing applications?
- Q: How do basic data security and encryption principles apply to software interfacing with hardware systems?
- Q: How do you manage code changes, pull requests, and daily standups within an Agile or DevOps team environment?
- Q: What steps would you take to plan, design, and execute a standalone capstone engineering project from concept to presentation?
