Job Overview
- AfterQuery is seeking a remote Software Developer Expert for a flexible, project-based contract role. Backed by top venture investors including Y Combinator and Box Group, AfterQuery is an artificial intelligence research lab focused on advancing AI capabilities through high-quality, human-generated datasets. This position involves undertaking targeted software engineering assignments, debugging complex issues, refactoring existing codebases, and writing technical documentation over an estimated project duration of 2 to 3 weeks. Developers will work asynchronously across varied technology stacks, engaging in peer code reviews and architectural planning. The work demands solid foundations in core software engineering principles, algorithm design, and modern programming language ecosystems. This role is exceptionally well-suited for early-career software engineers with 1 to 3 years of experience
Key Responsibilities
- ★ Author, test, and deploy clean, maintainable code across diverse software projects and technology environments.
- ★ Diagnose, refactor, and enhance established codebases to improve system efficiency, performance, and scalability.
- ★ Participate actively in asynchronous code reviews by exchanging constructive technical insights and feedback.
- ★ Partner asynchronously with team members to define technical specifications, system architecture, and execution strategies.
- ★ Produce clear, reproducible technical documentation covering code structures, API interfaces, and engineering approaches.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ★ 1 to 3 years of full-time professional software engineering experience (or equivalent capacity).
- ★ Advanced proficiency in at least one modern programming language alongside its standard tooling ecosystem.
- ★ Proven capability to independently analyze, design, and deliver software features, bug fixes, and technical tasks.
- ★ Comprehensive understanding of foundational computer science principles, including data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- ★ Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- ★ Prior experience across multi-tier software stacks, including frontend design, backend systems, APIs, or infrastructure components (preferred).
- ★ Practical familiarity with version control mechanisms, CI/CD automation pipelines, and joint development workflows such as Git or GitHub Actions (preferred).
- ★ Exposure to cloud computing environments and deployment platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure (preferred).
- ★ History of building independent personal projects or contributing to open-source software repositories (preferred).
Who May Be a Good Fit for This Role?
- This role may be suitable for early-career software engineers with 1 to 3 years of professional experience who are seeking high-impact, short-term contract work. Candidates who thrive in asynchronous work environments, manage their time independently, and enjoy working across diverse technical stacks will find this project structure ideal. It is particularly attractive for developers looking to gain exposure to Y Combinator-backed startup environments, refine their problem-solving skills on real-world engineering tasks, and earn competitive hourly rates without sacrificing schedule flexibility.
What the Company Offers
- ★ Flexible time commitment allowing work on a personalized schedule.
- ★ Direct hands-on exposure to an early-stage, Y Combinator-backed startup environment.
- ★ Portfolio-building opportunities through solving complex, real-world engineering challenges across diverse codebases.
- ★ Professional growth by tackling varied development tasks across multiple technology domains.
- ★ Competitive hourly compensation ranging from $50 to $100 per hour.
