Job Overview

  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) offers a virtual summer research opportunity for continuing graduate students through the Computational Chemistry and Materials Science (CCMS) Summer Institute. Operating within the Physical and Life Sciences directorate's Materials Science Division, this program enables emerging researchers to participate in high-impact scientific initiatives. Interns engage in practical research focused on developing and implementing computational methodologies across chemistry, materials science, and related computational fields.
  • Working under limited direction and supervision, candidates analyze computational simulation data and assist laboratory scientists on advanced technical projects. The program provides hands-on experience in solving technical challenges while offering opportunities to present findings through virtual presentations or poster sessions.

Key Responsibilities

  • ★ Conduct practical scientific research focusing on method development and application within computational materials science and computational chemistry.
  • ★ Perform computational simulation data analysis in direct collaboration with laboratory research scientists.
  • ★ Execute basic to moderately complex technical assignments and provide technical support on research and development projects.
  • ★ Prepare and deliver virtual poster sessions or presentations to communicate scientific concepts and research outcomes.
  • ★ Apply foundational scientific principles to resolve technical problems and manage scientific data using personal computers.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • ★ Active enrollment as a continuing graduate student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a degree in chemistry, materials science, computational chemistry, or a related field.
  • ★ Eligibility to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
  • ★ Demonstrated academic achievement in materials science, computer science, or a related technical discipline.
  • ★ Experience applying basic scientific principles to address and resolve technical problems.
  • ★ Proficiency with PC or Macintosh computers and software tools including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for translating and reporting scientific data.
  • ★ Effective written and oral communication skills with the capability to present scientific concepts clearly.
  • ★ Proven ability to work productively within a collaborative team environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • ★ Broad foundational knowledge in materials science, computer science, or related computational fields.
  • ★ Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

Pre-Employment & Security Requirements

  • ★ Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicants selected for this position must undergo a pre-employment drug screening, which includes testing for marijuana.
  • ★ Security Clearance & Citizenship: This position does not require U.S. citizenship or a security clearance for standard assignments; however, assignments exceeding 179 days require a federal background investigation.
  • ★ Access Compliance: Candidates must satisfy access eligibility criteria established by Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Application Tips

  • Applicants may want to highlight relevant graduate coursework, computational research projects, and experience with simulation data analysis on their resume. Detailing proficiency with productivity tools like Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, along with any relevant programming or scientific software, can showcase technical readiness. Candidates should ensure their application reflects strong academic standing and clearly indicates their current degree program in chemistry, materials science, or computational fields.

Prepare for Your Interview

  • These suggested questions can help you prepare for an interview by focusing on the skills, responsibilities, and technical areas relevant to this role.

Suggested Interview Questions

  • Q: What specific computational chemistry or materials science methodologies have you used in your graduate research?
  • Q: How do you approach analyzing and interpreting data generated from computational simulations?
  • Q: Can you describe a technical problem you encountered during a research project and how you solved it using scientific principles?
  • Q: How do you structure a virtual presentation or poster session to communicate complex scientific findings effectively?
  • Q: What experience do you have collaborating with multidisciplinary teams or senior research scientists?
  • Q: How do you organize and verify scientific data when preparing technical reports or presentations?
