Job Overview
- Wordly is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer specializing in Node.js to join its expanding global engineering organization. This hands-on individual contributor role focuses on architecting, enhancing, and scaling Node.js services, modules, and API integrations that power Wordly's real-time translation ecosystem. Engineers in this position take full technical ownership of complex features from initial design through testing, production rollout, and long-term maintenance.
- The position requires deep technical expertise in Node.js, JavaScript, asynchronous programming, distributed architectures, messaging systems, and NoSQL databases. In addition to technical execution, the team emphasizes modern engineering practices, including the responsible integration of AI-assisted development tools to boost productivity. Designed for self-motivated professionals located across North and South America, this fully remote role offers the opportunity to build high-concurrency translation infrastructure utilized by corporations, government entities, and global events.
Key Responsibilities
- ▪ Design, expand, and maintain Node.js backend services, application modules, and RESTful APIs based on product specs and technical architecture.
- ▪ Introduce new system features into existing Node.js modules while preserving overall stability, software performance, and maintainability.
- ▪ Integrate Node.js backend components with core platform services, third-party APIs, and distributed microservices.
- ▪ Own the complete lifecycle of complex backend features from initial architectural design through deployment and operational monitoring.
- ▪ Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve intricate production issues across backend microservice architectures.
- ▪ Implement architectural solutions incorporating event streaming, messaging queues, NoSQL database stores, distributed caches, and CI/CD pipelines.
- ▪ Develop and preserve comprehensive unit and integration test suites to maintain software reliability and prevent regressions.
- ▪ Actively participate in architectural reviews and code reviews, providing constructive feedback to engineering peers.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ▪ 5 or more years of professional hands-on experience in backend engineering, with extensive work building and scaling Node.js services and APIs.
- ▪ Strong expertise in Node.js and JavaScript within backend production environments.
- ▪ Proven background extending, optimizing, and maintaining existing Node.js modules, services, and system integrations.
- ▪ Hands-on experience working with established Node.js web and backend application frameworks.
- ▪ Thorough understanding of asynchronous programming paradigms, non-blocking I/O, and event-driven architecture patterns.
- ▪ Significant experience building and supporting distributed systems and microservices setups.
- ▪ Practical experience utilizing messaging queues, event streaming technologies, NoSQL databases, distributed caches, and CI/CD pipelines.
- ▪ Demonstrated proficiency writing and maintaining unit and integration tests to ensure code stability.
- ▪ Proven troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and fixing complex backend issues in production systems.
- ▪ Practical experience utilizing AI-assisted developer utilities (such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, or Claude Code) responsibly.
- ▪ Solid foundation in modern software engineering workflows, including Git version control and team code reviews.
- ▪ Comfort working in a fully remote environment with the self-motivation required to deliver complex backend projects independently.
Desired Skills and Experience
- ▪ Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or an equivalent technical field from an accredited institution.
- ▪ Prior experience with Java or Kotlin and backend frameworks such as Micronaut or Spring Boot.
- ▪ Practical experience engineering systems that handle real-time audio streams.
What the Company Offers
- ▪ Fully remote work flexibility across supported geographic locations (United States, Canada, Argentina, and Brazil).
- ▪ Physical office space in Los Altos, California available for team members residing in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Application Tips
- Applicants may want to highlight their experience with Node.js backend architectures, asynchronous design patterns, and microservices on their resume. Detailing specific projects where you implemented messaging systems, NoSQL database stores, or comprehensive integration test suites will demonstrate technical depth. Candidates should also consider mentioning how they responsibly incorporate AI-assisted tools like Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code into their daily workflow, as well as any exposure to real-time audio streaming or alternative languages like Java or Kotlin.
