Job Overview
- ZOVU is seeking a Backend Developer Intern for a three-month, fully remote internship opportunity. ZOVU operates an integrated platform connecting restaurant operations across point-of-sale systems, table reservations, loyalty programs, staff scheduling, and customer management. Built around a transaction-based revenue model, the company is preparing its backend infrastructure for platform launch.
- This internship focuses on building and maintaining scalable backend APIs and data architectures using TypeScript, Node.js, Express, PostgreSQL, and Prisma. Depending on project priorities, the intern will contribute to core business domains such as order execution, inventory management, payment workflows, and reservation systems. The role emphasizes writing dependable backend code, enforcing multi-tenant data isolation, designing efficient database queries, and handling concurrent requests safely. Working roughly 32 hours per week, the intern receives direct code reviews and handles scoped project deliverables within a product monorepo environment on Google Cloud Run. This position suits early-career backend developers with practical experience in TypeScript and relational database design.
Key Responsibilities
- ★ Develop, deploy, and maintain RESTful APIs utilizing TypeScript, Node.js, and Express.
- ★ Design database schemas, write complex queries, and manage data models using PostgreSQL and Prisma.
- ★ Implement security controls, user authentication, role-based permissions, and multi-tenant location boundaries.
- ★ Build resilient core business logic with input validation, error handling, retries, and concurrency management.
- ★ Diagnose and debug application issues across server logs, database records, and system events.
- ★ Write automated tests and clear technical documentation to streamline code reviews and maintainability.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ★ Demonstrated experience building a personal backend project using TypeScript and Node.js.
- ★ Solid understanding of relational database structures, SQL query design, and API development principles.
- ★ Practical knowledge of request validation, user authentication, access control authorization, and systematic error handling.
- ★ Ability to explain database transaction concepts and their importance in maintaining data integrity.
- ★ Hands-on experience with Git version control and a structured technical debugging methodology.
- ★ Strong written English capabilities and reliable asynchronous communication habits.
- ★ Familiarity with Prisma ORM (preferred, though strong foundational knowledge of SQL and ORMs is acceptable).
- ★ Optional familiarity with multi-tenant architectures, payment gateway integrations, WebSockets, database migrations, request queues, or open-source repository contributions.
Who May Be a Good Fit for This Role? This role may be suitable for candidates who have built independent backend projects using TypeScript and Node.js and want hands-on experience developing enterprise restaurant technology. Candidates with a firm grasp of relational databases, SQL queries, authentication protocols, and API design will find this project environment well aligned with their technical skills. It is particularly well suited for self-directed developers who excel in asynchronous remote settings, possess strong written communication skills in English, and enjoy solving real-world backend data isolation and transaction management challenges.
Application TipsApplicants may want to highlight personal backend software projects built with TypeScript and Node.js in their portfolio or GitHub profile. When submitting an application, candidate emails should feature "Backend Developer Internship — TypeScript & PostgreSQL" in the subject line. Applicants should prepare concise answers regarding a backend feature they independently engineered, a complex database or API bug they investigated, and strategies for maintaining tenant data separation in multi-tenant environments. Demonstrating familiarity with relational database transactions, Prisma ORM, or cloud platform deployments can further illustrate technical readiness for this 32-hour-per-week remote internship.
