Job Overview
- The Full-Stack/API Developer position is a core engineering role focused on designing, building, and deploying scalable web applications, backend services, and spatial data pipelines. In this position, the developer contributes to modernizing public hydrologic data platforms, specifically enhancing the National Water Prediction Service (NWPS). Core duties involve delivering responsive web interfaces, constructing RESTful API endpoints, and enabling multi-source environmental data ingestion.
Key Responsibilities
- ▪ Design, test, and deliver end-to-end web applications and RESTful API endpoints for system modernization initiatives.
- ▪ Construct responsive and accessible frontend interface components, including hydrographs, data tables, map widgets, and gauge search features using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript or TypeScript.
- ▪ Guarantee full compliance with Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA web accessibility guidelines across all user interface components.
- ▪ Develop Python scripts and SQL queries to parse, transform, and manage complex hydrologic datasets within Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and S3 storage.
- ▪ Write automated unit and integration tests using Pytest, Jest, or unittest to maintain a minimum of 80% code statement coverage.
- ▪ Manage feature branching, pull and merge requests, automated pipeline executions, and code reviews across VLab GitLab and GitHub platforms.
- ▪ Engage actively in daily Scrum stand-ups, sprint planning meetings, story estimation, and issue tracking using Jira and VLab Redmine.
- ▪ Support senior technical staff by conducting automated sandboxed testing and database schema verifications for community-driven code updates.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ▪ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related technical field.
- ▪ 3 to 5 years of professional hands-on experience in full-stack web application engineering and RESTful API development.
- ▪ Strong programming skills in Python utilizing frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
- ▪ Solid expertise in modern frontend web technologies including JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
- ▪ Practical experience designing RESTful APIs, managing PostgreSQL databases, executing SQL queries, and handling JSON or GeoJSON data structures.
- ▪ Proven experience building web interfaces that comply with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 accessibility standards.
- ▪ Familiarity with AWS cloud environments (including AWS Fargate, S3, and Aurora), Docker containerization, and basic Infrastructure as Code principles.
- ▪ Proficiency with automated testing frameworks (Pytest, Jest), Git version control workflows, and issue tracking tools like Jira or Redmine.
