Job Overview
- OnePay is a consumer financial technology platform backed by Walmart and Ribbit Capital that provides integrated banking, high-yield savings, credit, lending, investing, and embedded financial services. The company is recruiting an AI Research Intern for an eight-week summer program running from June 21 to August 13, 2027. Reporting to the Head of AI/ML, this role focuses on researching, designing, and prototyping advanced transformer-based and graph-based foundation models using real-world customer, merchant, and transaction data.
- Operating primarily from OnePay's office in New York City, the intern will collaborate with cross-functional product, engineering, and applied science teams to convert research experiments into functional, production-ready software prototypes. This opportunity is designed for final-year graduate students with strong deep learning fundamentals and hands-on PyTorch experience who wish to solve complex modeling challenges and drive measurable commercial impact within a fast-moving fintech environment.
Key Responsibilities
- ★ Conduct applied research, model design, and network training on foundation architectures using customer, transaction, and merchant datasets.
- ★ Experiment with transformer and graph-based deep learning frameworks to address complex financial data modeling tasks.
- ★ Rigorously evaluate experimental results and translate promising machine learning findings into functional software prototypes.
- ★ Collaborate with cross-functional product, engineering, and analytics teams to align artificial intelligence solutions with user experience objectives.
- ★ Analyze model performance and deployment dynamics to support operational efficiency and business outcomes across platform services.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ★ Current enrollment in the final year of a Master's or PhD degree program in Engineering or a related technical discipline, with expected graduation in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028.
- ★ Solid foundation in deep learning concepts, including backpropagation, attention mechanisms, vector embeddings, optimization techniques, and training dynamics.
- ★ Practical experience implementing, training, or fine-tuning neural networks using PyTorch or an equivalent deep learning framework through coursework, research, or personal projects.
- ★ Completion of at least one previous internship in machine learning, research, or software engineering, or ownership of substantial technical projects.
- ★ Full availability to work on-site in the New York City office at least 3 to 4 days per week throughout the 8-week program (June 21 – August 13, 2027).
- ★ Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical skills, and clear verbal and technical communication skills.
- ★ High degree of self-motivation, strong organizational skills, detail orientation, and a collaborative mindset.
Preferred Qualifications
- ★ Familiarity with transformer foundation model architectures, including pre-training methodologies, fine-tuning techniques, inference optimization, and structural tradeoffs.
- ★ Exposure to graph neural networks (GNNs), message passing algorithms, or representation learning on structured graph data.
- ★ Coursework or hands-on project experience involving Large Language Models (LLMs) or Generative AI.
- ★ Research track record demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, workshop papers, or open-source project contributions.
Program Timeline and Selection Process
- ★ Program Duration: 8-week full-time internship running from June 21, 2027, through August 13, 2027.
- ★ Application Schedule: Candidate review and interviews take place on a rolling basis, with final cohort selection targeted by December 1, 2026.
- ★ Interview Stages: Evaluation includes an initial screen, a Talent Partner interview, a technical/hiring manager interview, a team interview, and an executive review.
Work Authorization Requirements
- ★ Applicants must hold existing legal authorization to work in the United States.
- ★ OnePay will not provide employment visa sponsorship for this internship, nor will sponsorship be considered for future roles.
What the Company Offers
- ★ Hourly pay rate of $32 per hour.
- ★ Direct experience building and prototyping production-ready models in a high-growth fintech company.
- ★ Workplace access to the company's New York City SoHo office.
- ★ Professional development opportunities and organized team social events.
Application Tips
- Applicants may want to highlight graduate-level research, coursework, or public code repositories that demonstrate practical deep learning competence on their CV. Including specific details regarding hands-on experience with PyTorch, transformer models, graph neural networks, or Generative AI can clearly show technical alignment. Where applicable, candidates can benefit from detailing previous research internships, open-source contributions, or publication records. Emphasizing analytical problem-solving skills, clear technical communication, and confirming availability for the hybrid NYC schedule from June to August 2027 will help present a complete application.
