Job OverviewWEX, a global commerce platform specializing in business payments, employee benefits, and mobility solutions, is hiring an AI & Data Platform Engineering Intern for its 13-week paid summer internship program running from late May to mid-August. Working remotely within the United States, the intern will join the Data, AI, and Risk Technology (DART), Semantic Foundation, and Enterprise Applications engineering teams. In this role, interns collaborate with experienced engineers and researchers to build advanced Big Data platforms, artificial intelligence applications, semantic data models, and automated agentic workflows. Key tools and technologies utilized include Python, SQL, Airflow, dbt, PySpark, Snowflake, cloud infrastructure, and large language models (LLMs).
Key Responsibilities
- ★ Develop machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities to support fraud detection, credit risk evaluation, and automated decision-making.
- ★ Construct enterprise semantic models and standardized data assets to ensure consistent business context across analytical and AI applications.
- ★ Build SQL queries, data ingestion platforms, and pipeline workflows using microservices and DAGs to clean, enrich, and process corporate data.
- ★ Design specification-driven architectures and declarative system components to implement AI-assisted production workflows.
- ★ Prototype proof-of-concept AI implementations, automated scripts, agentic systems, and large language model tools for enterprise business cases.
- ★ Establish automated data-quality validations, system alerts, and observability metrics to ensure high data accuracy and platform freshness.
- ★ Enhance platform resilience, developer tools, and CI/CD automation through reusable engineering frameworks and automated testing.
- ★ Partner with engineering colleagues to integrate data tools and AI services into enterprise corporate systems via APIs.
- ★ Participate in technical design sessions, peer code reviews, architecture documentation, and production readiness evaluations.
- ★ Enable non-technical business stakeholders by creating clear documentation and demonstrating how to adopt AI and data tools in daily workflows.
- ★ Research emerging AI frameworks, generative AI tools, and open-source libraries, presenting findings and technical demonstrations to the broader team.
- ★ Collaborate across cross-functional engineering, product, and research teams to deliver data-driven solutions and communicate business impact.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- ★ Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- ★ Completion of at least sophomore year of undergraduate studies prior to the start of the internship program.
- ★ Proficient programming capabilities in modern languages such as Python, Java, or Go, combined with understanding of object-oriented concepts, scripting, and Git version control.
- ★ Solid foundational knowledge or strong academic interest in artificial intelligence, machine learning algorithms, and natural language processing.
- ★ Practical experience with data manipulation, analysis, visualization, and relational database systems using SQL.
