How to Build an ATS-Friendly Resume That Recruiters Can Read

Many employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to organise applications before a recruiter reviews them. An ATS-friendly resume is not a special design file; it is a clear document that makes your skills, experience, and contact details easy for software and people to understand.

Use a simple structure

Choose familiar headings such as Summary, Work Experience, Education, and Skills. Use a single-column layout, readable fonts, and consistent dates. Decorative text boxes, multiple columns, icons, and important information inside images can be difficult for resume software to interpret.

Match the job description honestly

Read the requirements and identify the tools, responsibilities, and qualifications that genuinely match your background. Use the same terms where they accurately describe your experience, but never add a skill simply because it appears in the listing.

Write achievement-focused bullets

Start each bullet with a strong verb and explain the result of your work. For example, instead of saying you managed social media, describe how you planned campaigns that increased qualified enquiries or improved engagement over a defined period.

Check the file before applying

Save the final version as a text-based PDF unless the employer requests another format. Copy the text into a plain document to check that the reading order is sensible, then review the file name, email address, links, spelling, and dates before submitting it.

Our ATS resume tools can help you review your resume against a role, but the final document should always be accurate and easy for a human to scan.
